From S. Teresa on the Corso d'Italia...the four wings on the hat indicate it is that of a doctor of the sacred science (of theology).

Four wings are worn also by all German priests and deacons; I was told that is due to the fact that German universities used to be (are?) highly prestigious, and every seminarian is required to pass a difficult, comprising philosophical and theological exam. I would like to be told if that is the true reason; who knows?
