De Magistris il Grande...

Cardinale subito! Born in 1926, this guy has been walking the streets of Rome in his Roman cassock and collar since the forties. Be inspired!

God bless Monsignore Luigi de Magistris.

I hope he is a Cardinal in the next consistory...which Pope Benedict XVI should be calling shortly.

I was in the Roman Major Seminary at the turn of the millennium. DeMagistris was one of the bright spots, very Catholic, very clear, very priestly. The devotion of the seminary was to the Madonna della Fiducia, of Confidence, and he had a bishop's ring with a cameo of the image. Whenever he would see us, he would lift up his ring and say, "saluta la mamma!" He is awesome! The Roman Minor Seminary, which has OL Perseverance as their patroness, is on hard times now. In my day they had gone down to 4 seminarians and not one of them ever came over to the Major Sem. Vatican intrigue, ironically among more conservative prelates, was said to have edged him out of the cardinal's hat which ordinarily would have been his. He has been a victim for his defense of the faith in the Vatican. He may never get the red hat, but a crown of glory certainly!

i was last in that bldg about five years ago. i think its now called the casa pastor bonus. its been a hotel and conference center since about 2003.

the chapel remains. it has a giant fresco of the roman protomartyrs and the famous icon remains - with free holy card prints of it.

its a good hotel in a great location, but sadly there are no longer vocations here. abortion and contraceptives have changed the face of the church and world.
