The Solemnity of the Annunciation of our Lord has always been a big ordination day in Rome. This year the celebration fell on March 31.
The Redemptorists were proud to have one of their own consecrated bishop at their Rome parish of St. Alfonso on the Via Merulana (the parish attached to their institute of moral theology, the Alfonsiana: http://www.alfonsiana.edu/).
The new bishop's name is Mons. Fernando José MONTEIRO GUIMARÃES, C.SS. The good news is that he's one of the good guys. He has worked for some years in the Vatican's Congregation for Clergy. He is a loyal son of the Church (one can tell a lot about a bishop by the mitre he wears).
His Eminence Card. Hummes was the consecrating bishop while His Eminence Card. Sepe and His Exce. Bishop Piazenza were co-consecrators. The Heralds of the Gospel made up the choir while the Legionaries of Christ were the altar servers. It was a lovely ceremony celebrated with great solemnity.
Please pray for the new bishop as he returns to his native Brazil to take possession of his new episcopal see. During his brief words of thank you after the end of the rites, while all choked up, he offered many profound words of which I can say that it was one of the best sermons I have ever heard. His words still ring: "Vbi Petrvs, ibi Ecclesia..."
