Rome's Vittoriano: the colours...

Some might disagree, but Piazza Venezia is the de facto center of Rome. It's a great joy to cross it each and every day and to enjoy the sense of the whole city on the verge of collapse.

Yes, but it is hideous

The "Vittoriano" is the worst black spot, wich the unhappy Savoyard regime bequeathed in the centro storico. In the years after 1870 about one third of the precious historical substanse of the city inside the walls was demolished (dozens of beautiful palaces, convents, churches of various centuriesetc) for such absurdism and rubbish. Only the the "duce" in the 1920ies and 1930ies surpassed the Savoyards in tastelessness.
The Rome of today might be still beautiful but the city before 1870 was a world apart now unfortunately lost forever. Look at old photographs in archives or historical surveys and you will know what i mean and you might feel a bit of it`s former ambience.

It is truly hideous and should be demolished. If only we could still have the old Papal city of Rome without the horrendous Savoyard and fascist monuments inflicted on it!
