Inisfada: Cardinal Pacelli's U.S. base...

In the autumn of 1936 the future Pope Pius XII arrived in the United States.

For years he had been good friends with two Americans who often came to Rome, Dutchess Genevieve Brady and her husband Nicholas.

This manse, Inisfada, is where Cardinal Pacelli stayed during his U.S. visit. Of course he was on the road most of the time, but this they refered to as his U.S. base.

The manse was built between 1916-20. For years it's been my dream to visit here on Long Island for a retreat.

Come any time - I will put you up. I used to work there during summers, cooking for the Jesuit community that runs the house, as well as retreatants. I know the property inside-out, including the secret stone spiral staircase that goes from the basement to the roof. I still live 5-10 minutes from there. Absolutely beautiful property.
