The good old days: how it was done...


Until the bad old fifties this is how the Latin rite reed looked like that was used to light the Pascal candle. The idea was that of one candle with three wicks. Anyways, this is what it sometimes looked like if you ever wondered (and this is how to reproduce it).

In many respects, the pre-1955 Holy Week, which has been celebrated in an unbroken tradition in certain places until the present. Recently, communities in full and visible communion with the Supreme Pontiff have been pressured to give up this particular usage because is frowned upon by an exaggerated legalistic mentality.
As an oriental, I see the great value in different usages within the Latin as within the Byzantine traditions. The more ancient Latin Holy Week has many elements which are closer or parallel the Byzantine Rites.

FYI. This is not the Paschal candle. This is the reed with three candles of white wax decorated with flowers that the deacon processed in with and used to light the Paschal candle during the Exultet.
