Pope Leo I thanks Providence for having safely hidden the Christian faith in the fortress of Roman imperialism:“So that the effect of the ineffable divine grace may be spread over the entire world, God in his providence provided the Roman Empire…It was most appropriate for the divine plan to have many states of the world united in one empire, thus making it possible to disseminate quickly the universal message of the gospel to the nations, because all were under the rule of one state.”
