Question: Now that Fr. Foster is back in the U.S. and possibly not returning because of his health, what is the best way to learn Latin in Rome, especially for an English speaker? I attend one of the Pontifical Universities and the the Latin classes they offer are a complete waste of time.

Dear Ponte: I think that due to the disastrous state of the teaching of Latin the best you can do is to buy a good Latin grammar and learn by yourself the magnificent Cicero's tongue. It requires more time, dedication and perseverance, but at least you will be sure you are not wasting your time. When we recall those times when Latin was the language of teaching in Seminaries and Universities... But even Cardinals and Bishops currently do not know to speak in Latin! Remember Cardinal Medina's complaint in a synod of Bishops, when he had to abandon Latin and start speaking in Italian to the synodal Father because the most of them did not understand what was being said...
