Hungarian Cardinal: splendor of the cappa magna...

Wow, don't you just love the glory of the Roman Rite? Here we see the Archbishop Emeritus of Esztergom-Budapest and Primate of Hungary, László Cardinal Paskai. Isn't the cappa magna just glorious?! His Eminence was the celebrant of this Requiem Mass last November 4 in Siena for the repose of the souls of the Hungarian victims killed by the Soviets during the great uprising of 1956.

This year marks the 50th anniversary of the uprising. Please pray for the victims. See more photos of this lovely Mass here: http://templomosok.freeweb.hu/aktualis.html

What a pity the Cardinal wore his scarlet cappa rather than the violet traditionally worn for Requiems and times of penance.

Was it a traditional mass? I think so but... not sure.

With this point of Roman ceremonial, the question of color of the cappa magna, i'm not sure any human in a hundred years has seen a violet cappa magna on a cardinal (it was likely short lived).

But yes, a Cardinal’s cappa magna, red at ordinary times, is (or was) purple during the penitential season, on days of mourning, and when attending funeral services.
Cardinals wear a silk cappa magna during the entire year, except on Good Friday, when they should wear a capa of wollen material. But, insomma. It all gets expensive, where does one store them, moths, and who’s counting and why?

Yes, the Mass was sung in the Tridentine Rite.
