Gammarelli: measuring room of tailor to the popes...

John, is there a story to the tiny chasuble in a frame, and the (also tiny, I think?) cardinal's choir dress (including the mantelletta), or are thy just made to be decorations?

Yes, having been in business since 1798 they have some interesting items.

Each of the items here is just for decoration in the little measuring room at the back of the store. You see here the pianeta in the frame which is just on a solid pice of silk.

Notice the old choir dress of cardinals (until circa 1967, right?), which is just minature and on the top of a table. They also had an old portrait of a cardinal, a crucifix and a couple other nice pictures on the walls.

Thanks, John. The mantelletta for cardinals (and bishops) was abolished by the infamous instruction "Ut sive sollicite" in 1969.

Yes, upon request the Gammarelli will make any item for anybody (when there's a dollar to be made!)...

At least since the turn of the present century, if not in the 1990's, before a cardinal-creating consistory, Gammarelli has invariably displayed the full-size version of the winter cardinatial choir dress in the shop window, including the mantelletta. They invented the particular shade of red, modified sometime in this century to make it lighter.

If I would like to have a choir cassock made for bishop, (abito paonozza)what fabric options are available to me? I would like a silk/wool blend, with red piping, grosgrain lined bottom, silk-thread spun buttons. If I don't want a zipper, will they honor this and other requests? What am I looking to spend, with the addition of a silk fascia?

I am curious about having a choir cassock made by Gammarelli (abito paonazzo)if there are several options of fabric I can choose from. I would like a silk blend of the purple, red piping, grosgrain ribbon lining the bottom, silk thread spun buttons. The only thing else I need would be the silk fascia. If silk is an option, how much could I be looking to spend at Gammarelli?
