In the late 70's, I participated in the "Affiliate Program" at a Norbertine foundation in North America. I was in my early 20's and wanted to become a holy man. Imagine my shock when I witnessed the daily "gaudiemus" where a bunch of drunks got together to abuse alcohol. Imagine my shock when the priest who was the "superior" of the Affiliate House was as crazy as a loon. He incessantly hit the keys of a keyboard and told us that he "channeled" the ancient spirits of great pianists. This man was the most self-centered man I had ever met or have ever met since. Also while there, I was notified by my family that one of the Norbertines had been accused of sexual abuse at a local high school. That was kept quiet among the affiliates. When I confronted the "pianist" he told me they had decided not to inform the affiliates for fear it would negatively impact our vocations. What an insult! No, they'd rather me be embarrassed to find out some other way. Anyway, I think I might have unresolved issues, huh?
