From the mariner's compass! One of the best things to do is to see the sunset from the Port of Rome (70 km from Rome). I like to sit on a "cleat" on the pier, smoke my English pipe and enjoy the sea salt in the air and smell the fish nets and opaque lacquer baked wood boats and watch all the boats navigating. I often look for a "lateen sail" rig, too, so as to take a photo of it, but you never see those here anymore...
