For nine centures black has been used by Cathholic clergy as a sign of uniformity, poverty, humility, etc. Black is always available, timeless, economical, doesn't show when soiled and is always fashionable! Only in the tropics, by special papal indult, the use of white is permitted in the place of black for Catholic clergy.

Actually, white is permitted in some dioceses in the United States as well, such as Atlanta.
Fearful bodyguard, indeed :-)
And St Dominic and the other reform movements of the middle ages chose white for their habit as a mark of poverty...

in rome i just bumped into this same (discreet) bodyguard from the photo and i forwarded your comments to her. in a fury she denounced you all as "worthless liberals" and said that you should all, "be forced to spend the night in a haunted house!" :-)
