Tomb of Archbishop Annibale Bugnini...

There were many giants of the twentieth century. I guess maybe this prelate was one of them. This is his tomb, just outside the village of his birth, Civitella del Lago, in Umbria. I was there last March and it was a lovely time in the sunny hills of Umbria.

The village of Civitella del Lago is set high above an artificial lake, Lake Corbara, which is really just the Tiber River. It’s a lovely little village set high in the Umbrian sky. In fact, it’s just next to Orvieto.

This is the tomb of the guy who ruined the Mass. Accused of remasonry, Paul VI had him "exiled" to Iran or somewhere.

Great Site !!! Great Pics!!!

Yikes and spooky tomb says sprit of the age anyone? FYI just don't entrust the reform of your liturgy to a guy who had a personal art collection like Paul VI.

Now I know where it is, I think it's time to have that neck-tie party and Tiber-toss I've always dreamed about.

Bugnini "great"? I am not sure what you mean with this. If you mean that he is a figure of history certainly he is of the Catholic Church. But "great"? Are Marx, Engels, Lenin, Stalin, Hitler and all famed people that brought destruction and death to their organizations great just because they appear in history books and in whose names millions and millions of human beings were sacrifized in the altar of ideology? How many million catholic suffered under the doctrines of Bugnini? C'mon. But let us not forget that the ultimate responsability for everything that happened in the Catholic Church between 1963 and 1978 is Pope Paul VI, not Bugnini.

The juxtaposition of Msgr. Schuler and Archbishop Bugnini is just priceless! On the one hand, you have the man who made the Mass the sad ruin that it is today, and on the other, one of the few who really tried to make something good come from the ruin. What's especially sad is how Bugnini himself would have loathed the beauty and holiness of the tradition that Msgr. Schuler created at St. Agnes.

First here is a quote by Dietrich von Hildebrand from his book The Devastated Vineyard, "Truly, if one of the devils in C. S. Lewis's The Screwtape Letters had been entrusted with the ruin of the liturgy, he could not have done it better." ; Next here is a little story that was told to a small audience by Dr. Alice von Hildebrand: Her husband's uncle, who was ambassador of the Vatican to Austria, had noticed the actions of Bugnini were somewhat suspicious. He then took his concern to a bishop (whose name was withheld) and so this bishop sent a priest to infiltrate the files at a particular Masonic Lodge. The priest had a successful mission and uncovered documents that proclaimed Annibale Bugnini a Mason. This case was brought to Pius VI by the anonymous bishop and he told the Pope that he had to do something or he would publicise the documents he found! In the story that was told Dr. Alice von Hildebrand said he went into a rage and the bishop left with no answer. The next day Bugnini was exiled and a few days after that the priest that discovered the papers was found ritually murdered!!! Very scary thought that the hierarchy of the church is that far infiltrated!

A giant of the 20th century? Perhaps in heresy... This was the man who almost destroyed the traditional roman rite, my dear!
A real unhappy artcle in a otherwise fine blog.

I love it JPS. You are a comic genius. I particularly like the inscription on the tomb - "liturgiae cultor et amator" followed by servi' la chiesa! The irony has me rolling around on the floor. I'm dying with delight.

For obvious reasons I don’t like to speak ill of the dead, but I’ve never been a fan of Bugnini in light of his willful misrepresentation to the Pope and others.

But how unlearned or satisfied to bear misrepresentation are those who would deny that Stalin, Bugnini or Bush have been giants of the twentieth century?

"For obvious reasons I don’t like to speak ill of the dead" (JPSonnen).

Is telling the thruth to "speak ill of the dead"?

I don't think so. The thruth as ugly as it is, is the thruth. And we have a responsability to pass the thruth to future generations so that they learn from ours and their predecessors mistakes. If not we would be falling in the sin of "omission" and "lying". Yes, to withould the thruth deliberately or because it is too ugly is "lying".

All of these events sorrounding the II Vatican Council belong to the "history of salvation" and must be recorded for future memory, for the benefit of future generations.

It is well to Pray the Angel's prayer told at Fatima in reparation for the damage/ destruction of the traditional Mass in Latin, and for the souls in Purgatory. The effects of corrupting the Original Latin Sacrifice is now at it's hieght, where Arcbishops< Bishops, priests, Eucharistic ministers does not know it! Communion in the hands is not intrensically evil?, no respect to the real presence of Our Lord? and many abuses,etc....It is even challenging if you ask for grace, to see the "truth" and Our Lord should lead you to a "narrow gate" of the Traditional Latin Holy Sacrifice of the Mass, It's further interesting to watch or observe if the priest is really talking or conversing with Our Lord, The Supersubstantial Bread". Love the Lord the "Living Bread". Our Catholic Faith is rooted in the Gospel of St. John. CH 6:27-72 (as your Bible reading tonight),verse: 41 "I am the living {not dead} bread which came down from from heaven. May the Roseate Blood of Mary purify Our souls. Amen. God Bless US!
