Parents in large part impart upon their kids a sense of Catholic culture.
Dad always enjoyed St. Nicholas Day and the night before he'd always have us kids put our shoes out before we went to sleep. With great emotion we would carefully place our shoes at the bottom of the stairs next to the piano. That was in the eighties.
Dad, we later heard, got this tradition from his dad, who likely got it from his dad who likely got it from his dad, ad infinitum. Don't let this stuff die with our parents, but let's continue it!

My family picked up that tradition when we lived in the Netherlands when I was a kid, and when, hopefully, I have kids of my own, I plan on putting candy in their shoes too :)
