I wish to see the tiara again...I understand that Hungary gave Pope John Paul II a tiara that has never been used..That seems a shame..Would seeing it a few times a year be that terrible, as so many suggest? It is a part of our Catholic tradition and still symbolizes the Papacy..
I looks a bit like the nose cone of a rocket. Very unfortunate style, attempting to be both modern, and yet strangely retro. Just think, John Paul I was in for scarcely more than a month and in that time he single handedly upended this great and glorious tradition, and JP II followed suit.
I still say all we trads on the blogosphere pitch in and have a tiara made for the gloriously reigning Pontiff. Somehow, I think Benedict might actually consider wearing it...
Wonderful images! By the way, I came across some old issues of the German yellow press from the late 1950s, containing some rather nice photographs of Pius XII. and his successor John XXIII (http://picasaweb.google.de/nickischaepen/Liturgie?feat=directlink)... they might be interesting for you. With kind regards and prayers,
i Think that a Pope will soon wear the Papal Tiara again
ReplyDeleteIt really is the ugliest tiara I've ever seen. If only Paul VI had just gotten a new one.
ReplyDeleteThat is the ugliest Papal Tiara ever. I am glad it was given away!
ReplyDeleteInteresting detail: there are two pearls missing at the right "scarf".
ReplyDeleteWho made ear-drops out of them.....

ReplyDeleteGuys
ReplyDeleteYour hopefulness is admirable, but it's more likely the Holy Father will celebrate the TLM next week than he will wear the tiara (ever)in his reign.
The symbollism of Pope as king with a court is just too much for many to accept.
And frankly, better that he celebrate the TLM. It will do more for souls anyway, in my humble opinion
